When I started reading this, I wasn’t sure what kind of supernatural I was getting myself into. Was it vampires? Gods? What kind of powers were these?? It’s like vampires, but they feed on souls, not blood, and the world that Farley is thrown into includes these Soul Reavers and their descendants.
This book was adrenaline-filled from the get-go. It starts with Farley being followed by some guy who basically pulls her out of her truck in the middle of stopped traffic, then he fights off bad guys with some supernatural ability, and then he starts showing up everywhere. Next thing, she’s thrown into this world she doesn’t understand, and is apparently being ‘protected’ by Stalker Guy (aka. Daniel).
I really enjoyed Frankie Rose’s characters. Farley was a character who grew a lot, which was great to see. She started out as a girl who’d lost her parents and was just making her way through life, trying to find out what she could about her missing mother. Being discovered by Daniel and Agatha allowed Farley to figure out who she was, where she came from, and give her life some direction. I liked how Farley never really seemed like a typical teenager. She was more mature than some YA characters because she’d been living on her own for six months.
Daniel was a frustrating guy. He was so hard-headed and moody and determined. I’m surprised Farley didn’t give him a beating for all the emotional upheaval he put her through. Although, he did have his reasons. I had a really fun time watching their relationship grow. Agatha and Aldan were two other characters that played a major part in this story. Although she seemed young, Agatha had an old heart and was a much-needed mother figure for Farley through everything. And Aldan was such a fountain of discovery and knowledge. He really was a special character.
The only slow part to this story was when Farley first arrives at the underground hangar where she spends much of the book. It’s slightly confusing because I was trying to figure out exactly what was going on. However, that’s exactly how Farley was feeling as well; just trying to get used to her surroundings and figure out what she was doing there. Apart from that, the rest of the story was a page turner, for sure! I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next, and I had NO idea how this book was going to end! But let me tell you, the ending perfectly set up the next book, and it nicely wrapped up what happened in this one. And now I can’t wait for Eternal Hope to come out in September!
